Dick D’Amato’s career and interests span forty years -- from serving in senior policy positions on Capitol Hill, to elective office in the Maryland General Assembly, serving on the Appropriations Committee, as well as appointments to a variety of federal commissions and charitable boards. He also works for environmental and sustainable development projects. He was a naval officer, serving in the Pacific during the Viet Nam war and teaching at the U.S. Naval Academy. He retired from the Navy Reserves as a Captain.
His recent activities include Vice President of Synergics,
an international energy company, which is developing the first major
wind energy projects in the state of Maryland. He is a participant in
Vice President Gore’s climate project, serving
as a presenter on the nature of our climate crisis to community,
business and academic groups. Earlier in his career, he participated in
the U.S. Senate delegation to the Global Climate Change Negotiations in
Kyoto, Japan. He is the organizer and Director of the "The Forum", a monthly public discussion with experts on key National Security topics, sponsored by Maryland's "What's Up" magazine including sessions on Nonproliferation, US-China relations and strategic implications of climate change.
He has been appointed by the Senate Democratic Leader to high-level Federal Commissions, including six years on the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, where he was elected chairman for two terms. He also served on the Trade Deficit Review Commission.
Dick serves on a number of Boards, including the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Maryland League of Conservation Voters (AArundel County), Chesapeake Legal Alliance (tries to enforce the state's environmental laws), the University of Oxford Congressional Visitors Program, the Institute for Strategic Studies in Prague, Czech Republic, Johns Hopkins Cuba Exchange Program, and the National Sailing Hall of Fame. He is also an associate producer with "Filmsters" of Annapolis, a film production company, providing story ideas and lines on historical and political issues.
He also founded the annual Taste-of-the Nation dinners in Annapolis as part of the nationwide “Share Our Strength” hunger relief organization.
